Program Assistant
The Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL) has been selected by peer organizations to serve as administrator of the GREEN HEVRA, a network of Jewish environmental organizations working together to further define and build the Jewish environmental field. We are seeking a part-time program assistant who will report to COEJL’s director and work with the Green Hevra stewardship (steering) committee. This position is currently funded for one year, based in COEJL’s New York office and available immediately.
The Green Hevra is a network of 15 Jewish environmental organizations focused on defining and strengthening the Jewish environmental movement and developing strategic opportunities for breakthrough environmental results in the Jewish community and beyond. COEJL’s mission is to deepen and broaden the Jewish community’s commitment to stewardship and the protection of the Earth through outreach, activism and Jewish learning. Since 1993, COEJL has been an initiative at the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA).
The program assistant will work 10 hours per week and more by agreement during two retreat periods.
The tasks of the program assistant include, but are not limited to:
- Managing the Green Hevra membership roster and listserv;
- Facilitating communication between subcommittees and the whole group;
- Scheduling phone and in-person meetings and securing attendance;
- Planning and managing logistics for two major retreats, including invitations and attendance, food and housing, transportation (if needed), and other tasks as needed;
- Taking notes during meetings and helping committees identify and designate tasks for follow up;
- Creating relevant meeting documentation and assigning related post-meeting follow up;
- Managing reimbursement and receipts;
- Attending retreats.
By staffing the Green Hevra, the program assistant will gain:
- Exposure to network creation and field development in the Jewish environmental sector;
- The opportunity to network with staff from 15 core Jewish environmental organizations;

Farming apprenticeship
JEWISH FARM SCHOOL and EDEN VILLAGE CAMP are seeking farm-education apprentices for a multidisciplinary program where they are both farm staff and farm educators. They will work directly with the farm manager and farm educators to participate in all aspects of the two-acre farm: seeding, greenhouse production, soil preparation and amending, composting, cultivating, harvesting, weeding, animal care, fruit and orchard management, and tractor work. Since the farm is only in its third season, apprentices also will have the opportunity to create and develop new facets of the farm, such as helping start beekeeping, build grape arbors and orchards, expand flower production, research and implement alternative composting methods, or other ideas.
Responsibilities include:
- During summer camp, apprentices will lead a variety of farm-based activities and educational programs for campers of all ages, while also assisting in maintaining the daily operations of the farm, and various agricultural projects around camp;
- When camp is not in session, Jewish Farm School and Eden Village run educational programs on the site and the farm, including Sunday farm volunteer days, a fall harvest festival coinciding with Sukkot, and other skills workshops. Apprentices will be the farm educators for all of these programs.
Learning opportunities:
- Weekly seminars in organic, small-scale agriculture;
- Trainings in Jewish environmental education, including the Teva Seminar;
- Participation in the Hudson Valley C.R.A.F.T. Program, a network for young organic farmers;
- Participation in various on-site workshops, such as natural building and herbal medicine;
- Field trips to various organic and educational farms in the area.

Fellow
The NEW ISRAEL FUND is seeking social-justice fellows.
In 1997, the Nomi Fein Social Justice Fellowship was established by Nomi's family after her sudden death at the age of 30. Three years later, a second Social Justice fellowship was created to honor the life and memory of Rabbi Richard J. Israel. In 2008, thanks to the generosity of NIF donors, the NIF/SHATIL Social Justice Fellowship was again expanded. For the 2012-13 Fellowship year, NIF has six U.S spots and one Canadian spot.
NIF/SHATIL Social Justice Fellows spend 32 hours per week interning in an approved, individually-selected Israeli non-governmental organization (NGO), active in one of the following areas:
- Civil and human rights;
- Social and economic justice;
- Environmental justice;
- Jewish pluralism.
Additionally, Fellows engage in monthly enrichment programs and periodic site visits to further develop their understanding of Israel, Israeli activism, and their role as activists both in Israel and at home. Fellows also receive training in leadership and community development. Because Fellows intern full time in an Israeli NGO, successful applicants must have either excellent Hebrew language skills, or good Hebrew with excellent Arabic skills. Living expenses are covered by a modest stipend.
The Fellowship year runs from Sept. 1, 2012 — June 30, 2013 and completed applications, including two letters of reference, are due on Jan. 20, 2012. Applicants should be college graduates by the start of the Fellowship year. Only U.S. and Canadian residents are eligible for the SJF; Israeli permanent residents are not eligible to receive an NIF/SHATIL Social Justice Fellowship.

COEJL Fellow
The Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL) is seeking a paid fellow. The fellow will report to the director and/or assistant director and be located in New York City. This position is available starting in January 2012 and may be available through the year.
COEJL’s mission is to deepen and broaden the Jewish community’s commitment to stewardship and the protection of the Earth through outreach, activism and Jewish learning. Since 1993, COEJL has been an initiative at the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), where it develops consensus positions on environmental issues for the organized American Jewish community. COEJL is also the Jewish member of the National Religious Partnership for the Environment (NRPE).
The fellow will work for 1-2 days a week.
Work includes, but is not limited to, the following projects:
- Populating the website with new and previous material;
- Helping create volunteer blog schedule and collect postings for website;
- Increasing COEJL’s Facebook and Twitter followers;
- Updating COEJL’s online speakers bureau;
- Conducting fundraising data clean-up project.

Program coordinator and administrative associate
EDEN VILLAGE CAMP seeks a program coordinator and administrative assistant to manage its programs, hiring process, scheduling. S/he will work closely with the co-directors to communicate with families and manage the entire registration and enrollment process.
Responsibilities include:
- Organizing and managing all of the camp's summer programs and schedules;
- Advancing the structure and quality of camp procedures and policies;
- Identifying and developing curricular frameworks by unit and program areas;
- Handling parent communication and camper registration;
- Soliciting and maintaining complete camper and staff records;
- Managing the database of camper and staff information.
Typically, the program coordinator has a background in camping, teaching or youth development. The coordinator should be comfortable in diverse settings and with a variety of challenges; be a born problem-solver, organize, and multi-tasker. The Coordinator must be able to inspire love and care within a vast team and exude the spirit of Eden Village to campers, parents and visitors.
The position is based at our office at the camp site in Putnam Valley, N.Y., and requires living on site for at least three months every year. Cross USA Ride spring Intern
HAZON is seeking an intern to assist planning for its with Cross USA Bike Ride, which will run from Seattle to Washington, D.C. in the summer of 2012. Preparations for the ride are in full swing. You can gain valuable work experience planning logistical pieces of the trip, managing volunteers and providing customer support. This internship is in Hazon's New York office located in downtown Manhattan.
Requirements:
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously;

Responsabilitiies:
- Research many aspects of our cities along the route including accommodations, Jewish and interfaith communities and permits for the ride;
- Plan overnights for the Ride, booking campgrounds, college dorms and hotels;

- Engage in grassroots marketing efforts such as tabling at events and flyering in New York City;
- Perform additional duties as needed.

CANFEI NESHARIM is seeking an intern to work empowering the Jewish community to protect our environment.
The intern will work an average of five hours per week on a range of website, outreach and communications projects, including tasks associated with:
- The development of Canfei Nesharim's new website;
- A new set of Jewish environmental core teachings and tools being created for use by Jewish communities worldwide;
- Are You Gonna Eat That?: A New Food-Waste Campaign;
- Jewcology.com, a web portal for the global Jewish environmental community.

Jewish Experiential Nature Fellowship
AMERICAN JEWISH UNIVERSITY is seeking people who will help shape the cutting edge of outdoor Jewish education. Fellows learn through doing — everything from hiking to organic gardening to Torah study. Fellows also will practice what they learn by serving as experiential educators for students and families who come to AJU's Brandeis Bardin Campus in Simi Valley, Calif., about 45 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport. Brandeis Bardin is a 3,000-acre "natural campus" that includes a year-round retreat center and Jewish summer camp — as well as a working farm with hundreds of cows, dozens of horses, goats, chickens, orchards and a 10,000-square-foot organic garden.
Fellows live in their own bunkhouse on the Brandeis Bardin Campus; receive free room and board; and a stipend of $100/week.
Fellowship dates:
- Session 1: Sept. 12 – December 30;
- Session 2: Jan. 21 – June 7;
- Session 3: Aug. 1 – Sept. 7 (gardening fellowship exclusively- no stipend).
There are opportunities for Fellows to remain for the entire year as well.
Fellows work 30 hours a week. This work includes but isn’t limited to:
- Organic gardening and helping schools start their own gardens;
- Constructing new program sites;
- Staffing programs, camping trips and overnights;

Farm director
JEWISH FARM SCHOOL and Eden Village Camp are seeking a farm director for the Farm at Eden Village. The farm director oversees all farm programming and operations and supervises the farm manager, farm educators and the farm-education apprentices. In the spring and fall, the farm director works closely with the year-round programs coordinator to implement a full calendar of programs for children and adults. Infrastructure Coordinator
WILDERNESS TORAH is a young Jewish nonprofit organization with a mission to awaken and celebrate the earth-based traditions of Judaism to nourish the connections between self, community, earth and spirit.
The infrastructure coordinator is a new, part-time (approx. 15-20 hours/week), contract position with a desired start date of July 2011. Wilderness Torah festivals create a village from scratch for 150-200 people in remote locations. They require key pieces of infrastructure including large and small shade structures, an outdoor kitchen, bathrooms, waste/recycling stations and solar lighting/electricity/gas needs. The festivals also require coordinating a complex set-up and breakdown process with many work-exchange participants. Major responsibilities include: Leading coordination of everything infrastructure, gear, building, inventory, site, set-up, break-down and facilities related for Wilderness Torah’s growing Pilgrimage Festivals — Sukkot on the Farm, Passover in the Desert, and Shavuot on the Mountain — in partnership with Wilderness Torah staff and volunteer leadership. Wilderness Torah's organizational philosophy is one of collaboration, communication, commitment, and sustainability.
Responsibilities include:
- Work with Wilderness Torah staff to create a village infrastructure vision for the Pilgrimage Festival Program and for each festival individually;
- Scout sites for festivals, manage site logistics, and liaise with site administrators;

Fellows
URBAN ADAMAH is a residential leadership-training program for young adults that integrates urban organic farming, social-justice work and progressive Jewish living and learning. Fellows will operate an organic farm and educational center in Berkeley, Calif., while interning with community-based social-justice organizations addressing issues at the intersection of poverty, food security and environmental stewardship. The Urban Adamah curriculum is designed to equip fellows with the tools to become agents of positive change in their own lives and in their communities. Field organizers
J STREET seeks field organizers in the following regions: Northeast (based in Boston), Mid-Atlantic/Southeast (based in Washington or Philadelphia), and Midwest (based in Chicago). This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual who is an effective organizer and team builder, and is committed to Israel and progressive Jewish values. The field organizer will be part of a comprehensive and integrated grassroots program of a young, fast-growing nonprofit organization.
Over the long-term, J Street aims to ensure that there is a broader discourse regarding Israel and a broader conception of what it means to be pro-Israel in all aspects of the Jewish community. Organizing and mobilizing pro-Israel, pro-peace supporters at the grassroots level is an essential element to all of this work and at the core of this work will be mobilizing the 165,000+ supporters of the organization. J Street Locals are responsible for implementing a robust field plan including grassroots advocacy, educational programming, outreach to individuals, Jewish organizations and other allies, as well as grassroots fundraising in local communities around the country.
The primary focus of J Street field organizers will be to support the work of the regional directors to organize and maximize the potential of existing J Street Local operations around the country and in some cases, support the creation of new Locals. Field organizers will work with the regional directors to support individual Locals, including in leadership recruitment and outreach, educational and persuasion programming, and congressional advocacy. Field organizers also will support event planning and national speaking tours in their region, as well as assist in developing materials. In each region, field organizers will serve as the primary point of contact with at least 1-3 Locals. As part of a regional team, field organizers will be asked to coordinate and work in tandem with other members of the J Street family.
Responsibilities include:
- Support the work of the regional directo;
- Provide support for Local event planning and speaking tours;
- Serve as the primary point of contact for 1-3 Locals in the region;
- Provide some administrative support to the regional director;
- Identify and recruit new leadership for the organization;
- Assist the reginal director in organizing new J Street Locals in target cities/regions;
- Provide assistance to reginal directors with database and online communications;
- Participate in a series of national staff calls as well as regional calls;
- Travel within the region to support the work of the reginal director and monitor various grassroots activities/events;
- Speak persuasively and effectively on behalf of J Street;
- Provide support for national initiatives in the region;
- Assist reginal director to provide regular tracking;
- Report on a day-to-day basis to the regional director;
- Participate in weekly team calls;
- Be responsible for specific requests and assignments made by the vice president of field/grassroots.
Qualification include: Grassroots organizing experience at the campus, regional or state level; Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team, juggle multiple tasks, build relationships and take initiative, and set priorities; Excellent time management and strong communication skills required; Willingness and ability to travel.; Candidates must also be extremely tech savvy and able to manipulate data, spreadsheets and have a comfort level with constituent relationship software; Specific experience in online activism and social media is a plus.

Director of operations and marketing
NEGEV NECTARS is a unique venture that brings the finest gourmet, sustainably produced and organic foods from the Negev region of Israel directly to American consumers. The director of operations and marketing manages all aspects of this business from coordinating product development and the subsequent shipments with farmers on the Israel side, producing packages and channels of distribution for the products, working to market and sell the fine goods on the American side, and managing the Negev Nectars brand. The director of operations and marketing manages his/her own time on a day-to-day basis in response to the needs of the business and reports to Marvin Israelow, founder and owner.
Responsibilities include:
- Plan product line and develop membership packages and other product offerings;

Summer-program coordinator
The mission of the TEVA LEARNING CENTER is to renew the ecological wisdom in the Jewish tradition and to renew our community through connection with God’s Creation. Since its inception in 1994, Teva has been at the forefront of the Jewish environmental education movement. Teva is the largest full-time year-round program dedicated to experiential Jewish education taught through the lens of the natural world. Teva teaches more than 6,000 people annually from across the nation and from all denominations, ages and constituent groups, including Jewish day schools, congregations, community centers and camps. At the Rose Nature and Ecology Center, Teva educators will lead campers in experiencing the wonders of the natural world through hands-on investigation and radical amazement.

Environmental educator
TEVA educators consist of musicians, artists, performers, athletes, scientists, scholars and lovers of life. Some educators hold advanced degrees in education, environmental studies, and social work. All Teva educators are hired because through prior experience they have demonstrated strong skills in working with children.
Salary:
$275 per 5-day work week as well as lodging for the entire contract period and meals while programs are in session. In general, a work week is from 9:00 a.m. Sunday to 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Educators are not paid a full salary for the training period at the beginning of a season, but will receive a stipend equivalent to one week’s pay for the three-week period.

- Participate in trainings (1/3 of all work time) and learn Teva’s curriculum;

Achdoot coordinator
In the TEVA Achdoot program, 7th- and 8th-grade students from Jewish day schools focus on community building, outdoor-living skills and renewing the connections between Judaism and the natural world. Achdoot provides students the unique opportunity to experience the splendor of Creation, from dawn until sunset, inspiring wonder, cohesiveness, and camaraderie within the group.

Schedule:
In general, a work week is from 9:00 a.m. Sunday to 6:00 p.m. Thursday. Sundays are devoted to staff development and training, and preparing for upcoming trips. Experts in the fields of ecology, environmental education and Jewish environmental ethics run the seminars. Students generally arrive on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. and depart at about 2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. Staff will drive to the site and meet students there. Sites are generally 45 minutes away, but could be as far as 7 hours. Trip leaders will have the morning off following a trip.

Rosh Teva at Surprise Lake Camp
The person in this exciting position will be supervised by the assistant director of the TEVA LEARNING CENTER in relation to curriculum, and by Elyse Braun, Surprise Lake Camp specialist coordinator in relation to programming, scheduling and day-to-day operations. Surprise Lake Camp’s Teva program consists of hands-on and educational activities relating to nature and the environment in a Jewish context. Rosh Teva will plan and lead six activity periods a day, involving campers aged 7-16. Additionally, Rosh Teva will be responsible for planning and implementing the Mainside Teva hobby for campers aged 7-13 and the camping and hiking specialty for campers aged 13-16. Rosh Teva will take a leadership role in the planning and implementation of the camp-wide Shomrei Adamah Day and serve as a resource for individual-unit greening projects. The Rosh Teva also will be responsible for increasing camper environmental awareness and appreciation. Rosh Teva will supervise and schedule the other Teva staff.
Salary:
For Teva staff alumni, salary starts at $4,000 and goes up based on experience. For other candidates, the salary varies based on experience.

Farm interns/counselors
EDEN VILLAGE CAMP and JEWISH FARM SCHOOL seek two farm interns/counselors for the new Eden Village Farm. The internship begins in April and runs through October and offers a unique mix of responsibilities and learning opportunities. In the spring, interns will work alongside the farm manager to create the two-acre farm. In the summer, interns will work as farm counselors for Eden Village Camp. In the fall, interns will continue to work on the farm and serve as educators for various programs.
Educational opportunities:
- Introduction to permaculture;
- Natural-building projects;
- Social-justice training for environmental educators;
- Participating in a local network of young farmers;
- Jewish environmental and agricultural education;
- Seed saving and food storage.
Qualifications:

Responsibilities:
- Assisting farm manager in day-to-day farm work;

- Assisting with coordinating various on-site programs on-site including the Hazon bike ride, Shavuot and Succot festivals, Eco Beit Midrash, and farmer skill-share retreat.

Farming apprenticeship

ECO ISRAEL, based on the Hava & Adam eco-educational farm between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, offers English-speaking Jewish young adults, ages 18-30, a 5-month professional apprenticeship and coursework in permaculture and sustainable living. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive an internationally recognized certificate in permaculture design. Eco Israel is an intimate program that offers participants the opportunity to explore how ecology, Judaism and Israel come together in a working model of a self-sustaining ecological community.

Ecology internship
The ARAVA INSTITUTE has established a site within the International Long Term Ecological Research network -- the only ILTER site in the Middle East. Its mission is to provide natural-resource managers with the scientific information necessary to promote long-term biodiversity and sustainable development. It will create interdisciplinary research combining ecology and other natural sciences (such as geology, hydrology, agriculture) with social studies (such as urbanization, geography, anthropology, economics) to build a conceptual model of the area and assess the area's environmental problems.
Research interns can be involved with any of the following:
- Working on building an ISSE conceptual model for the site: This model is based on the American LTER work of Scott Collins, director of Sevilleta LTER at the University of New Mexico. It links sociology and economics with ecology to study ecosystem service. The work will be with Dr. Daniel Orenstein and Scott Collins. The work is mostly academic and is suited for someone with a background in ecology, biology, sociology, economics or related fields.
- Building the priorities regarding tasks ahead of the platform: This work will include researching the environmental and ecological problems of the area, finding data, interviewing local researchers, rangers and building a work plan. The work will be with the manager of the site, Gil Ben-Natan, and it will be mostly meta-data collections, finding information, interviewing people, and traveling.
- Liaison with Jordan: This role will require writing research proposals together with Jordanian and American partners. This means researching the priorities of both committees and preparing research proposals. This work will be with Reuven Yosef and it requires someone with interest in international relationships.
- Ecological impact of the proposed Red-Dead Conduit: This work will be will be with Clive Lipchin and Gil Ben-Natan as part of the Arava Institute's social, agriculture and ecological work on the proposed canal.
- GIS mapping of the area into habitats, based on geology, land use and dominant plants: Working with Micha Silver and Gil Ben-Natan, this requires a background in GIS.
- Ecological research: Any ecological research that has been recognized by the science committee's meeting can be done with any of the researchers in the area.
Research interns must commit to a period of between two months and one year. The position is self-funded -- costs are currently 3,000 NIS per month, which covers room, board, office space and supervisory expenses.

Executive director's assistant internship
The executive director’s assistant intern helps the executive director and the associate director of the ARAVA INSTITUTE (AIES) implement daily tasks as well as strategic plans. The position is full-time starting immediately.
The areas in which assistance is required include:
- Fundraising tasks and trip planning;
- Human resource management;
- Board of directors communication and planning;
- Meeting coordination;
- Hosting individuals and groups;
- Research and academic work;
- Representation of the Arava Institute.
The intern’s specific responsibilities include:
- Email filtering and communication;
- Data entry;
- Filing;
- Logistics;
- Research.
Please note: The intern must own a laptop and have a cell phone.

Alumni-networking internship
The ARAVA INSTITUTE's Arava Alumni Peace and Environmental Network (AAPEN) intern works with Sharon Benheim, the director of alumni projects. Join the team to help enable a network of alumni of who wish to work together as a community of international citizens connected by the Arava Institute to cooperate to transcend political borders for environmental improvements, education and a culture of peace.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the director of alumni projects in collecting and entering data to alumni database;
- Encourage alumni use of the alumni Web portal;
- Visit alumni projects in the field -- this may involve travel every other week;
- Assist the director of alumni projects in writing alumni updates for PR and development purposes;
- Assist the director of alumni projects in writing new content for the alumni portion of the Web site;
- Assist with planning of conferences, workshops, meetings and AAPEN gatherings;
- Make phone calls to alumni who are out of our system;
- Assist in affiliating AAPEN with international and regional organizations;
- Assist in overseeing internships or alumni projects as needed;
- Participate in office toranut, cleaning merkaz or other facilities, moving days, etc.;
- Attend meetings as needed;
- General office assistance and English-language proof reading;
- Assist with academic program events as requested;
- Assist in hosting visitors.
The AAPEN intern will be expected to:
- Work full time (about 50 hours a week);
- Provide one's own laptop computer and cell phone.
