Jewish food-justice fellows


The JEWISH FOOD JUSTICE FELLOWSHIP, a pilot professional-development program designed and implemented by the Leichtag Foundation in San Diego’s North County coastal region, is seeking fellow to support vibrant Jewish life in southern California and to combat poverty and increase food access and self-sufficiency. The program will focus on food justice, agricultural sustainability and Jewish community engagement. Eight to 12 fellows from throughout North America and Israel will be selected in the pilot cohort.

Fellows will be placed in substantive positions at well-respected San Diego nonprofit organizations. They also will support North County Jewish community members in connecting with each other and the community and develop programs at the Paul Ecke Ranch in Encinitas California, a 67-acre piece of property currently under option to purchase by the Leichtag  Foundation.

The fellowship is 15 months, beginning in late September 2013 and ending in late December 2014. All applicants must commit to participation for the full 15 months.

Farm-education apprenticeship


JEWISH FARM SCHOOL and EDEN VILLAGE CAMP are seeking farm-education apprentices. f you are a young adult seeking hands-on experience growing food, gaining practical skills, and developing as a Jewish environmental educator, work with us at Eden Village Camp, one hour north of New York City. We are seeking six or seven individuals for a six-month paid apprenticeship from April 14 through Oct. 18, 2013.

Apprentices receive full room and board for the duration of the program, as well as a stipend of $2,000.

Director of finance and operations


URBAN ADAMAH, a community farm and Jewish environmental education center in Berkeley, Calif., is seeking a director of finance and operations to serves as a member of the leadership team and as the chief financial and administrative officer for the organization. Areas of responsibility include financial management, database management, general operations and human resources. This position reports to the executive director and supervises a full-time assistant/office manager and occasional interns.

Responsibilities include:

  • Creating and maintaining systems for all aspects of financial management and reporting for the organization;
  • Managing organizational accounting in Quickbooks including all data entry;
  • Preparing financial reports as needed for the Executive Director and Board of Directors;
  • Closing the books (QB, Bank Accounts, Credit Cards) each month;
  • Providing necessary information to the CPA who reconciles our finances each month;
  • Creating/managing transactional bookkeeping systems, including coding, tracking and timeliness, to optimize internal controls of accountability and ensure efficiency;
  • Overseeing cash flow planning and ensuring availability of funds as needed;
  • Ensuring maintenance of internal controls and financial procedures;
  • Ensuring legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions;
  • Tracking key financial metrics for the organization;
  • Managing database (Salesforce) and ensuring that it captures useful information for the executive director and board to make effective decisions;
  • Managing the system of tracking and acknowledging all gifts to the organization;
  • Overseeing registration and payment by all participants in organizational programs;
  • Creating HR systems for the organization and supervising Office Manager who performs routine HR tasks;
  • Creating and managing office and operational protocols for the organization, including supervising the office manager who executes many of these protocols;
  • Managing IT systems for the organization.

Requirements include:

  • Being a strong team player while working well independently;
  • Excellent writing, oral and interpersonal skills;
  • Being extremely detail oriented;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Experience using Quickbooks and Salesforce in other organizations is strongly preferred;
  • College graduate;
  • At least three years of experience in organizational administration;
  • Personal alignment with the mission, values and heart/mind/body approach of Urban Adamah.

Start Date: January 1 or sooner.

Salary and benefits: This is a full-time position. Salary is competitive and depends on experience. It includes full heath-care benefits and generous paid vacation.

Organic-farm alternative-break group leader


JEWISH FARM SCHOOL seeks group leaders to work in collaborative pairs to manage all aspects of the Jewish Farm School Organic Farm Alternative Break trip experience. You will work closely with Jewish Farm School staff and Hillel co-leaders to manage logistics, supervise and participate in assigned work projects, and protect the health and safety of all trip participants, amongst other duties. Group leaders should have experience as a formal or informal educator with college students, have a high track record of success in managing groups and have particular experience in facilitating educational sessions using Jewish texts. Significant knowledge about agriculture and/or food issues is mandatory. Each trip is one week long (Sunday-Sunday) and trip leaders who are able to lead two trips in one season are given preference. A mandatory training will be held at Kayam Farm outside of Baltimore from Jan. 30 to Feb. 3, 2013.

Program coordinator


The Teva Learning Alliance’s mission is to fundamentally transform Jewish education through experiential learning that fosters Jewish and ecological sustainability. Teva Learning Alliance is a national Jewish nonprofit organization focused on innovation in Jewish education. Since 1994, Teva has worked with more than 450 day schools, congregations, camps, JCCs, BJEs, youth groups and other Jewish institutions. The more than 100,000 individuals who have benefited from Teva's direct programs cover the spectrum of religious affiliation and age. The 700-plus educators who have sought out Teva's professional development opportunities spread ripples throughout their own communities. 

Salary:

$13,600 plus room and board for on-site seasons.

Dates and locations:

April 16 to June 15, 2013: A work week is 5.5 days, 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Pearlstone Jewish Retreat Center, near Baltimore.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Liaison with the site, including but not limited to: kitchen, housing, maintenance issues, programming spaces and program turn-over logistics;
  • Liaison with schools, including but not limited to: housing and group assignments, curricular and programming concerns, students and staff concerns;
  • Liaison with parents as needed, including but not limited to: food allergies, other medical concerns and behavioral issues;
  • Supervise educators, at times in coordination with the director, including but not limited to: training, evaluation of educators, communal issues and disciplinary action;
  • Facilitate staff meetings;
  • Oversee EMT/WFR;
  • Provide logistical support to educators, including but not limited to moving, packing, and unpacking of the program, maintenance of supplies and ordering new supplies;
  • Fill in as needed and as time allows in educational opportunities, including but not limited to: song-leading, tefilla coordination, all-group programs, electives;
  • Liason with schools to calendar for 2013-2014 program.


Required skills:

  • Previous experience as a Teva educator (or Jewish environmental educator) preferred;
  • Organized with great attention to detail;
  • Excellent people skills and communication skills;
  • Ability to specific direction, as well as work independently;
  • Computer Skills: Word, Excel, Picasa;
  • Interest in taking on a leadership position;

Operations director


EDEN VILLAGE CAMP is seeking an operations director. This is a full-time year-round position. There is significant opportunity for you to grow and lead a substantial operation in vision, management and organization.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise and assist the maintenance manager in preparing the campus annually for start-up/shut-down;
  • Oversee the hiring of outside contractors and additional staff for these periods in consultation with the maintenance manager;
  • Work closely with the directors to record, maintain and update the site’s calendar and facility use schedules;
  • Manage facilities, including weekly and monthly facilities walk-through to ensure that facilities are up to standards of excellence;
  • Work with the camp directors to see that any potential issues are resolved in a timely manner;
  • Manage carpentry/construction site task lists, goals and priorities;
  • Assist in construction or maintenance projects to improve the site (primarily in the off-season);
  • Coordinate with vendors (supplies, telecommunications, building maintenance, insurance, etc.);
  • Negotiate and manage purchasing of equipment and supplies and make recommendations for the procurement of new equipment where necessary;
  • Manage supplies and equipment (storage, use, orders, service calls, etc.);
  • Monitor operations-related business accounts and prepare financial reports as needed;
  • Assist with logistical support for the camp and offseason events;
  • Determine and implement ways to enhance the office environment by coordinating new processes and procedures;
  • Assure all persons coming into the office are greeted in a welcoming, professional, polite and courteous manner;
  • Coordinate office space placement for full-time staff as well as seasonal staff, as necessary, through ensuring appropriate office set-up, furniture, telephone and other equipment are available;
  • Support the office with technology assistance as needed;
  • Work with the head chef to coordinate daily food services in our pioneering organic, made-from-scratch dining hall;
  • Liaise with food vendors and ensure orders are placed on time and minimum food inventories are met;
  • Troubleshoot issues as they arise;
  • Ensure the accurate tracking of meal costs;
  • Apply knowledge of kashrut (Jewish dietary laws), or willingness to learn about kashrut, to ensure that these laws are observed;
  • Manage or assist with logistical aspects of programs, retreats and events;
  • Exude the warmth of Eden Village Camp to campers, parents and staff alike at all times;
  • Make Eden Village Camp a warm and inviting place to be;
  • Assist occasionally with recruitment throughout the year;
  • Maintain active and warm correspondence with parents and camper families during the summer and throughout the year.

Intern

WILDERNESS TORAH is a young Jewish nonprofit organization with a mission to awaken and celebrate the earth-based traditions of Judaism to nourish the connections between self, community, earth and spirit.

 

As an intern, you will be instrumental in taking Wilderness Torah to the next level and will be part of a fun, dedicated and passionate group of people.

 

Projects may include:

  • Coordinating Wilderness Torah's Pilgrimage Festivals;
  • Researching fundraising opportunities and donors, planning events, tracking;
  • Creating web content, updating the website, managing marketing emails;
  • Compiling market research and analyzing data from event evaluations;
  • Finding new avenues to market Wilderness Torah’s events and doing media outreach;
  • Assisting with accounting, data entry and other database projects.

  • Excellent organizational skills, general computer and web savvy, and a commitment to connecting Judaism and the earth;

Fellows

URBAN ADAMAH is a residential leadership-training program for young adults that integrates urban organic farming, social-justice work and progressive Jewish living and learning. Fellows will operate an organic farm and educational center in Berkeley, Calif., while interning with community-based social-justice organizations addressing issues at the intersection of poverty, food security and environmental stewardship. The Urban Adamah curriculum is designed to equip fellows with the tools to become agents of positive change in their own lives and in their communities. Twelve Urban Adamah fellows will be selected to participate.

Henry Kaufman Campgrounds intern


Work as a campground intern for the TEVA LEARNING ALLIANCE, helping 1,800 campers aged 6 to 12 years old from six different Jewish Community Center day camps. 

Salary:

Extensive training plus $800 — $1,000, depending upon experience.

Location:

Farm at Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds, 75 Colonial Springs Rd., Wheatley Heights, N.Y.  Intern must be able to commute to the campgrounds daily, by car or by Long Island Railroad.

Dates: Late June to late August, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, and occasional evening work.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work cooperatively with the other intern, lead educator and program coordinator;
  • Learn about Jewish environmental education;
  • Work closely with program coordinator on farm and nature-center building projects;
  • Assist lead educator in teaching groups of campers;
  • Help maintain and grow the farm;
  • Help plan and prepare for camper groups.


Required skills:

  • Ability to think creatively and with a solutions-oriented approach;
  • Genuine interest in children and enthusiasm for learning and teaching about nature in an outdoor setting;
  • Experience working with children, preferably in an outdoor setting;
  • Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures;
  • Current CPR and first-aid certification.

Summer camp staff


EDEN VILLAGE CAMP (EVC) seeks exceptional, kind summer staff to inspire and empower campers toward a vision of a vibrant, sustainable Jewish community and world. Many leadership and career-building summer positions are available, as well as a full-time office administrator role. Working at Eden Village Camp is a unique opportunity to join an inspired, land-based, kid-centered Jewish community.

EVC is looking for staff members who want to:

  • Leave pop culture at the door and foster campers' healthy connections with nature, each other, themselves, and their Judaism;
  • Eat organic, made-from-scratch, farm-to-table meals (mostly vegetarian with vegan and gluten-free options);
  • Put campers' and camp's needs before your own as you live, play and work with kids 23 hours a day, 6 days a week;
  • Live in a pluralistic Jewish community that honors diverse Jewish experiences (EVC is strictly kosher and shomer-Shabbat-friendly);
  • Turn compost on the farm, make herbal salves, immerse in nature, milk goats, sing, explore swamps, bake in outdoor cob ovens.

Farm interns/counselors


EDEN VILLAGE CAMP and JEWISH FARM SCHOOL seek two farm interns/counselors for the new Eden Village Farm. The internship begins in April and runs through October and offers a unique mix of responsibilities and learning opportunities. In the spring, interns will work alongside the farm manager to create the two-acre farm. In the summer, interns will work as farm counselors for Eden Village Camp. In the fall, interns will continue to work on the farm and serve as educators for various programs.

 

Educational opportunities:

  • Introduction to permaculture;
  • Natural-building projects;
  • Social-justice training for environmental educators;
  • Participating in a local network of young farmers;
  • Jewish environmental and agricultural education;
  • Seed saving and food storage.

  • Assisting with coordinating various on-site programs on-site including the Shavuot and Succot festivals, Eco Beit Midrash, and farmer skill-share retreat.


Compensation:

  • Farm stipend for April through June;
  • Counselor salary for the summer;
  • Educator stipend for fall programs;
  • Housing for duration of position;
  • Meals while camp and programs are in session.

Farming apprenticeship

ECO ISRAEL, based on the Hava & Adam eco-educational farm between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, offers English-speaking Jewish young adults, ages 18—30, a 5-month professional apprenticeship and coursework in permaculture and sustainable living. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive an internationally recognized certificate in permaculture design. Eco Israel is an intimate program that offers participants the opportunity to explore how ecology, Judaism and Israel come together in a working model of a self-sustaining ecological community.
