The GZA 2010 platform for the 36th World Zionist Congress

Encourage water conservation initiatives
Foster water conservation through public and private education initiatives to reduce stress on Israel’s lakes, rivers and aquifers, and demand for energy-intensive desalinized water.

Work to reduce Israel’s air pollution and incidence of air pollution-caused asthma

Work proactively to adopt strict fuel-economy and vehicle-emissions standards; support the adoption and enforcement of strict industrial air-quality standards; increase the availability and use of public transportation; require that all official vehicles driven by Jewish Agency and  Keren Kayemet L’Yisrael / Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) workers meet tough emission standards.

Foster a transformation of Israel’s energy economy from fossil fuels to use of alternative, clean energy
Garner support for the initiation of solar-energy projects and other alternative energy sources to relieve Israel’s dependency on foreign coal and natural gas. Encourage energy conservation and green urban planning.

Work with KKL-JNF to create policies requiring sustainable development within Israel
In order to save Israel’s natural beauty and at the same time ensure the health of the Israeli public, KKL-JNF must incorporate practices that:

  • Preserve and restore open spaces, natural ecosystems and threatened species;
  • Confront the looming water crisis;
  • Promote river and wetlands restoration;
  • Reduce carbon emissions and increase carbon sequestration;
  • Create an open forum for decision-making regarding forestry management and ecological initiatives.

Pursue new environmental ideas and technologies

Encourage the WZO and KKL-JNF to invest in new technologies that will help Israel's environment — such as clean-energy technologies and water-saving technologies — and to embrace environmentally minded planning, such as the implementation of construction-reuse centers and the innovation of urban vertical farming.

Bring issues of food-justice and organic agriculture to the Zionist table

Encourage educational institutions funded by World Zionist Organization to integrate ecological education into their curricula and programs

Work toward a permanent and equitable solution to environmental-justice concerns
We will work with under-represented communities, including those in the geographic peripheries, the inner cities, Israeli Arabs and Israeli Bedouin to find solutions to their environmental concerns.

Work collaboratively with neighbors to solve environmental issues
Environmental issues are not confined to political or social borders. We support inter-governmental initiatives and collaborations that are essential in solving regional environmental and social concerns.

What is your favorite natural area of Israel?

Eco-Quote

"When you shall come to the land and you shall plant any food tree, you shall treat its fruit as forbidden; for three years they shall be forbidden to you, they shall not be eaten. In the fourth year, all its fruits shall be sanctified to laud God. And in the fifth year you may eat its fruit - so that it will increase its crop for you."

- Leviticus 19:23-25

Did You Know?

Israel has nearly as many plant and animal species as California.
